This book, which is the result of over twenty years collecting and research, brings together over 1150 tokens, checks, metallic tickets, passes and tallies which were very much part of the commercial, domestic and industrial life of Wales during the last two hundred years.
Here one will find examples of tickets, checks and passes used by all the great industries on which modern Wales is founded - iron making, steel and tinplate, copper smelting; lead and coal mining; slate quarrying; woolen and flannel weaving as well as those used for commercial and domestic purposes; railways and public transport; retailing and marketing; the co-operative movement; churches, chapels and the temperance movement; public houses, clubs, institutes and breweries.
The book is not however simply about numismatics or paranumismatics because by researching and reporting on the uses and functions to which these items were put, and by including many interesting facts about the people and organisations who used them, it has been possible to build up a vivid view of life in Wales during this period
The book should therefore appeal not only to numismatists and collectors, but to everyone who has an interest in the social history of Wales - museum curators, archivists, librarians and local and social historians.
